DESCRIPTION:Fountains High School is a Special Needs LEA school for 122 pupils, aged 11 – 19 years, who suffer from severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties. The school employs 15 teachers and 28 Teaching Assistants, a full-time nurse and a number of part-time visiting therapists.<br />
<br />
Built in sixties, the school premises are adequate, but tired and in need of upgrading. However, in the current climate, LEA capital funding is being drastically reduced. Activity equipment is sparse, both indoor and outdoor, and the range of stimulatory and exercise equipment is very basic. A new Headteacher was appointed last September with a brief to improve the over all teaching performance and facility provision within the school.<br />
<br />
The Wooden Spoon Sensory Room will provide the school’s only truly sensory awareness facility. It will be created by converting the existing ‘Quiet Room’ which is used currently as a haven for children who experience severe emotional/behavioural problems or disability attacks during the school day.<br />
<br />
The school has an active outreach/inreach exchange programme with local mainstream schools, youth groups and disabled groups which will mean that upwards of another 80 visiting children may benefit from using the Sensory Room every year.
