The Sussex Committee declared UDI from neighbours Surrey in November 2005 and has since set about their objectives of:
* Raising funds for disadvantaged children and young people in the county
* Increasing the awareness of Spoon as rugby's charity in all sectors of the rugby community
* Growing the membership in Sussex
We are delighted that Mick Cleary, Rugby correspondent with the Daily Telegraph and member of Hove RUFC, has succeeded Alex King as our Honourary President.
Most recently Bob Rogers, past President of the RFU and one of Spoon's most enthusiastic supporters, succeeded Don Coldrick as Chairman of Sussex Region. Welcome Bob, and many thanks to Don for his sterling efforts!
The Sussex Committee likes to get out and about and hold all meetings in rugby clubs across the county. All members and interested parties are welcome. Please contact the Chairman Bob Rogers (H 01903 785046, E bobrogers@therfu.com) if you want to learn more about what we do.
The next Committee Meeting is on 12th January 2012 at the Hove County Cricket ground at 7pm. All members are welcome - particularly those wishing to help our efforts!
Thank you...
Thank you to the following clubs for their help and support in putting Spoon on the map in Sussex:
Barns Green RFC, Bognor, Brighton, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Crowborough, Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Heathfield & Waldron, Holbrook, Horsham, Hove, Lewes, Plumpton, Pulborough, Shoreham, Uckfield and Worthing.
If your club can offer support to Spoon in any way please contact Ann Holt (annholt1@hotmail.com)
In addition to the Clubs, Wooden Spoon is also indebted to Sussex RFU in helping our charity. The end of season Sussex Clubs Curry Night has adopted Spoon as the charity of the evening and we have also been able to raise money from Sussex home games in the County Championships.
In the coming months we are looking to work more closely with the Director of Women's rugby and the Schools section of the County RFU.
We have also received support from a number of Companies who have kindly either nominated Sussex Spoon as their charity or made generous donations. The list is not exhaustive but special thanks go to:
Edgars Cool Waters, Shoreham (http://www.edgarscoolwaters.com/)
Southern School of Sports Massage, Haywards Heath (http://www.ssmt.net/)
Southern Sporting Clubs, Stratford upon Avon (http://www.southernsportingclubs.com/)
Orange Square, Haywards Heath
Heasmans Ltd, London
The Brewers Arms, Herstmonceux
The first project the Committee decided to support was the building of a kitchen in the "Living Skills Area" at Chailey Heritage School in Mid Sussex. Chailey Heritage receives no central funding and relies on its own independent fundraising to help their severely physically handicapped children. Spoon's project will help the older children gain a degree of independence as they prepare for life after school. (http://www.chaileyheritage.e-sussex.sch.uk/)
The second project Sussex is hoping to support is the creation of a new outdoor activity area for the FSN youth club in St. Leonard's on Sea in East Sussex. Our proposal is going to be presented to Spoon Trustees for approval in the summer. St Leonard's is an area of extreme social deprivation and this youth club is at the centre of the community helping children develop life skills and talents through sport and other activities (http://www.fellowshipofstnicholas.org.uk)
Christmas Fish & Chip Lunch
In December 2010 we hosted a fish and chip lunch on Brighton Pier which was a complete sellout. The event was hosted by Russ Williams who proved to be an excellent auctioneer in addition to his comedic talents, and with Andy Gomersall as our guest speaker a great time was had by all. So much so that the venue is being booked for 2011. Thanks to the generosity of all who attended and those that made donations for the auction we raised in excess of £5,000 and would like to thank everybody who made this such a successful afternoon.
So a date for the diary is December 2011 - tickets went extremely quickly last year so watch out for details!
