The final was played in front of 35,000 rugby mad fans between the IRB Sevens games, a daunting arena. The game was a fierce battle against former champions and was played in horrendous conditions as a torrential rainstorm swept in and swept away the hopes and dreams of the SpoonAAs. The Warblers were too strong and ran in two tries dampening the players’ spirits.
The SpoonAAs team, coached by former Quins player, Jon Eagle and captained by former Saracens and England Centre, Stephen Ravenscroft had support from a strong representative team including 49 capped Italian, Mark Giacheri, England players, Derek Eves, Stephen Boyle and overseas-bred players, Damien Cummins, Bradley A Hepi and Florent Rossigneux.
Congratulations to the team for progressing so far in the tournament and for representing Wooden Spoon both on and off the field.
Earlier in the day the SpoonAAs had reached the final after a close game against rivals Marauders. In a match that replicated last year’s quarter final, the two sides had nothing between them. The SpoonAAs team, comprising several players from last year’s Marauders' winning team grabbed the only points of the game to sneak through 5-0.
In the Ladies Tournament, the Wooden Spoon Ladies team lost in the quarter final to Saracens I, 21-5. They played a courageous game and are the only team so far to take any points off the strong side. They performed well and Wooden Spoon is very proud and impressed with their achievement and manner in which they have performed.
