| Danny Grewcock, a strong Spoon supporter and player for Bath and England, recently spoke to Radio 5 Live Sport answering the question as to what role sport can play in combating childhood obesity. He talked about the work of Wooden Spoon and explained our newest scheme - “Try for Life”. As Spoon aims to help disadvantaged children across the UK, we are increasingly tackling issues like obesity, which takes Spoon's work into very deprived areas because there is a link between deprivation and obesity. With the launching of this initiative, Spoon's intention will be to prevent young people establishing a mindset of 'sport's not my thing' by engaging them in rugby.
“Try for Life” encourages kids to get active, away from computers and the television and engage in the sport as a way to get healthy and learn teamwork. In the interview, Danny explained the sport by saying “every shape and size of kid can fit into rugby”. In addition to physical fitness, Danny also talked about the increased expectation that rugby players eat well and the role a healthy diet plays in success and how those engaging with the scheme will be instructed on healthy eating choices.
