| Over the last 25 years Spoon has distributed over £14 million to help improve the lives of socially, mentally and physically disadvantaged children. It has delivered projects to help children and young people combat bullying, violence, crime, obesity and discrimination as well as provided grants for playgrounds, sensory rooms, hydrotherapy pools and life skills centres.
Chris Gill, CEO of Wooden Spoon said "£14 million is a huge sum of money for Wooden Spoon to have raised and a real testament to the generosity of the rugby community. While we have a great number of celebrity supporters such as Lawrence Dallaglio, Gavin Hastings, Willie John McBride, Jonathan Davis and many more, we also have fantastic support from the wider family of rugby including the fans, amateur players and those people who just love the game."
Certainly the recipient of Spoon’s 14 millionth pound was extremely grateful for the financial assistance - The ‘Playing for Success’ project at Doncaster Rugby Club. Playing for Success is a scheme that puts fully equipped classrooms into sports stadia to provide numeracy, literacy and IT courses for young people, particularly those who need it most. The new classroom at Doncaster, which is due to open in 2009, will support 24 local schools and enable over 350 children to participate during any one academic year.
Chris Gill added "Wooden Spoon is passionate about the power of sport as a force for good and Playing for Success classrooms are just one example of this. Our vision for the next 25 years is to expand what we do in this area – and before long we will be giving away our 15 millionth pound to help improve the lives of more children by sharing with them, the benefits of playing and being involved in rugby."
