| This was Woody’s first outing to fortress Twickenham for the annual fixture between the Guinness Premiership team mascots. His appearance added to the fun and amusement that the game represents.
Woody kindly wrote about his experience to share with his fans…
“I have attended numerous very enjoyable social functions with the Wooden Spoon over the years and fully support what they represent. However, my invite to dress up as a 9ft Wooden Spoon or ‘Woody’ as he is affectionately known, was taking me into uncharted waters. The attraction of my ‘debut’ at Twickenham in the Mascot ‘7’s on the hallowed turf in front of 82,000 people made it impossible to turn down. I nervously entered the England changing rooms and adorned some rather smelly undergarments before heading for the pitch with my 9ft companion. A quick radio interview and before I knew it I was running into the ‘gladiators den’. It was an excellent opportunity to get the Wooden Spoon name in lights and represent the North of England. A winning debut and some cherished memories to regale to the grandchildren of my one and only appearance at Twickenham. I was honoured to help further a worthy cause albeit dress as an ‘oversized kitchen utensil’ as a chirpy radio commentator put it!”
Spoon Consultant and good friend, Mike Francis, adds some details to the ‘man behind the mask’. "Anthony Cook attended Canford School in Dorset, where he claims to have competed in athletics against another of Spoon’s finest – David Trick – in an inter school meeting. I first ran into Cook at UMIST, where we spent three happy years. He played only the inter department 7s once that I can recall, so his appearance at Twickenham probably represented a return to the game after a 25 year+ sabbatical. He does Search in London, is married with two children and lives in Putney. He coaches Mini rugby at Richmond and is an all round good bloke."
Thank you Cookie for kindly donning the Woody mascot suit and respresenting Spoon so athletically on the pitch.
