| Captained by experienced 7s player John Feeley of Rotherham and including Irish International 7s player Mark McComish the team gave up their time to represent a strong Wooden Spoon Anti-Assassins team attended the annual Scarborbough 7s on a lovely sunny day at the seaside on Sun 11th May. |

Coached by Jon Eagle and Sean Cassidy the team found themselves in a strong group. WSAAs started well against the well travelled Mels Exiles previous winners of such illustrious competitions as Amsterdam, scoring 4 tries to 1 to win 24 -7.
However, in the second group game a strong Leeds Elite team containing Leeds Carnegie 1st xv players including Mike Aspinall and Tom Rock grabbed control of the game scoring three quick tries including one straight from the iniital kick-off before a Spoon player had touched the ball. Spoon fought back but eventually lost four scores to three.
The final group game was against a Tynedale side who had won the Saturday event and although won comfortably resulted in injury to hooker Aaron Myers leaving the team with a squad of only 9 fit players.
In the other final group game Mels Exiles beat Leeds Elite, however despite being level on total tries scored across the games, Leeds qualified as group winners with WSAAs runners up by 2 points.
The semi final draw, therefore, saw the SpoonAAs against last year's winners a strong team from Northumbria captained by another past Spoon player Matt Deharty and despite hard work and the introduction of 47 year old sevens specialist Jon Eagle in the second half due to running out of players, the WSAAs were beaten.
Last year's winners went on to comfortably beat Leeds Elite in the final to be well deserved winners who clearly played the best sevens over the long and hot day. WSAAs player of the day was strong and fast running Steve Parsons from the Otley Club. Thanks to all the team for giving up their time and running out on behalf of Spoon. |
