| In the absence of the Headmaster, Dan Harrison acted as host and, before Mrs Joan Faulds presented the Cup, commented that we had seen more football in ten minutes here than we had seen in the England v USA match the previous evening!
Very fair comment, because the game was excellent, played at a frenetic pace throughout, with some quality play from both sides. That the Wooden Spoon A-As carried the day was due mainly to the fact that the forwards were both heavier and perhaps more street wise. Nevertheless, both sides threw the ball about almost with gay abandon and there was some splendid interplay between backs and forwards, with some remarkably good handling.
By the 15th minute, the Wooden Spoon A-As had scored three tries, by Jason Ashcroft, David Muckalt and Danny Collins, the latter two converted by Dan Eddie to the O.S’s one, by Jamie Robertson, improved by Ross Winney. Hugely entertaining stuff, and the visitors went further ahead with tries by Simon Bauer, supremely effervescent at scrum half and Scott Freer, with Dan Eddie adding the conversions. So 33-7 to the Wooden Spoon A-As at half-time.
Not surprisingly, as many of the players had turned out for their clubs the previous day, the second period was a quieter affair. Even so, the O.S’s threatened a recovery with Edward Parker crossing and Ross Winney converting. It was a brief threat, however, as Simon Horsfall scored twice in the last quarter resulting from continued Wooden Spoon AA pressure and Dan Eddie adding the extra points.
It was the usual delightful afternoon with a sizeable crowd watching an entertaining game, sympathetically refereed by the A-A's old friend Chris Sharp. Furthermore, it says much for the hospitality afforded by Sedbergh School that more than enough players were attracted to play for both sides.
Final Score: O.S. 14 Wooden Spoon A-As 43.
