Spoon Sevens Team goes into Battle at Worthing
Wooden Spoon Rugby sent a young team to play in the 5th Bob Knight invitational Sevens at Worthing RFC at the end of July. The standard at the tournament was very high with the Army and nave being represented but the Spoon team accredited themselves with honour and enjoyed running out for the charity.

Sunday at Worthing Rugby club dawned dry and bright and the many spectators were able to enjoy the sunshine and the festival atmosphere at Roundstone Lane. With 18 teams making the journey to the Raiders home ground, there were 36 matches played and a total of 1522 points were scored during the day. The round robin games were organised into 2 pools of 18 games each, but the subsequent withdrawal of Matt Hampson Trust meant that only 33 pool matches were possible with the pool winners going straight into their respective finals.

Under the direction of former Samoan International, Mike Umaga the side performed well in the pool stages, comfortably dispatching the Elves and the Spartans and played some great rugby. Notable performances came from Warwick Schoolboy Dave Askew (who was man of the match in this year’s U18 Daily Mail Schools Final at Twickenham)

In the quarter finals with Spoon’s first match against RONIN. A good start by Spoon took us into a two try to nil lead going into the turn around but the second half saw the RONIN side capitalise on some loose play by Spoon to come back strongly and take the spoils.
Spoon’s final match was against the eventual runners up in the tournament, RBS Royals who were a well organised team with some very quick players indeed and as you know in 7s, there is no accounting for gas. The Spoon boys battled to the end but ultimately the Royals superior experience and speed saw them proceed into the semis and for Spoon the day was over.
