| Wooden Spoon has recently established ‘Spoon Rugby’ to help raise awareness throughout the rugby world of the charity’s work to improve the lives of mentally socially and physically disadvantaged children and young people.
All the players in the Spoon Veteran’s team have performed at representative level, including former Irish International, John O’Neil and former rugby league player Brad Hepi. All the women are either present or past internationals including captain, Susie Appleby, present IRB player of the year, Maggie Alphonsi and Coach, Claire Frost. All these players have chosen to play for the charity teams as ambassadors for Wooden Spoon both on and off the pitch.
The Amsterdam 7’s, celebrating the 36th year of the tournament in 2007, hosted teams from all over the world. The Ladies Tournament stepped up a level this year with the addition of international teams from Canada and Wales as well as many strong club sides including National 10’s winners, Richmond. Spoon Women beat the club side 28-7 in a highly competitive final in front of an appreciative crowd. Winger Nolli Waterman scored a hat-trick and won ‘Player of the Tournament’ for her consistently outstanding performance. Spoon Vets had set the standard in the previous final, beating rivals, Marauders, 28-5.
CEO of Wooden Spoon, Geoff Morris said: “What these players are doing for Spoon is very impressive. They have really embraced the work of the charity and are giving up their time to do what they love while promoting Wooden Spoon. Their victories and fundraising efforts over the last few weeks have significantly raised the profile of the charity to rugby supporters from all over the world. The players really are a credit to the charity both on and off the pitch.
“I would like to thank WBS for their sponsorship and support for the last two tournaments. If there are any sponsors out there who want to help support Spoon Rugby, then please get in touch and jump on board for what we hope is going to be a very special journey for Wooden Spoon and the players supporting our Charity.”
