| The Spoon Veterans team comprised former players who have all represented their country at some level. Their class was obvious as they swept aside the opposition and romped to victory.
The Wooden Spoon Ladies team were making their first outing this year and had called upon the support of many present and former internationals to represent Spoon. The players’ total international caps exceeded 400 and included the present England Captain Sue Day and Welsh flyer, Non Evans.
The Ladies played in two tournaments over the weekend and became the only team in the history of the tournament to win on both consecutive days. They played the Irish I.I. Babas in both finals but demonstrated their skill and speed to win on both occasions. Out of the 11 games played during the weekend they scored 434 points conceding only 17.
The organisers of the Kinsale Sevens said: ”We are delighted to have a team of such high quality at our tournament. They have really impressed and many people who have never seen Women’s rugby before have been educated by their outstanding performances. We look forward to welcoming them back next year to defend their trophies.”
The Presence of the two Wooden Spoon teams aims to promote the work of the charity amongst a rugby audience and help raise funds to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in the UK and Ireland.
Manager of the Wooden Spoon Teams, John Dewhurst said “The players are a credit to the charity both on and off the pitch. It was an absolute pleasure to work with such a talented bunch and we thank everyone for making themselves available and for producing some magical moments of rugby.
“This is the start of what we hope is going to be a very special journey for Wooden Spoon and the players supporting our Charity.”
